Smart rolls out more 5G sites nationwide

PLDT wireless arm Smart Communications has further expanded its 5G network across the country by rolling out more 5G sites.

Currently, Smart has installed more than 1,400 5G sites nationwide as part of its ongoing 5G rollout.

The most recent Smart 5G-enabled locations are Benguet, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Misamis Oriental. These are in addition to 5G cell sites deployed in all of Metro Manila's cities and municipalities, and the provinces of Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Cebu, Iloilo, Aklan, and Davao.

Head of technology for PLDT and Smart, Mario G. Tamayo, said that network investments have allowed PLDT and Smart to enhance customer experience using the latest technologies available over the past years.

Tamayo said, "Just as we have invested in providing our customers with the best mobile data experience, we are ramping up our 5G rollout and continuing to expand our LTE--both of which are powered by our fiber network--to provide our subscribers an even better experience."

He added, "As we expand our 5G network presence across the country, we are also bringing the possibilities of 5G, such as faster speeds and lower latency for streaming high-resolution videos and playing online mobile games, closer to more Filipinos. Through this, we are also opening the doors to more possibilities of 5G that we have yet to imagine."

According to third-party internet analytics firm Ookla, 5G is seen to make the country's fastest mobile network.

Smart has also released specially designed Smart Signature 5G plans, which offer two times more data and have a Data Rollover feature, ensuring that any unused data allocation from the previous month is carried over to the following month. All Signature Plans now come with Unlimited Calls and Texts to All Networks.

Samsung, Huawei, OPPO, vivo, and realme are among Smart's partner mobile phone manufacturers to make 5G devices more accessible to its customers.

These initiatives for the 5G rollout are a significant part of PLDT's long-term network investments, which totaled Php286.3 billion between 2016 and 2020. In 2021, PLDT and Smart plan to spend between Php88 billion and Php92 billion on capital expenditures.

PLDT's fiber infrastructure supports Smart's 5G network, with more than 429,000 kilometers as of December 2020.
