Globe, DITO sign interconnection deal for mobile calls, SMS

Globe Telecom announced that it signed an interconnection deal with the country's third major telco DITO Telecommunity, enabling subscribers of both telcos to make domestic mobile calls and send SMS without additional charges within their networks.

Globe's general counsel Atty. Froilan Castelo said, "Globe's collaboration with DITO Telecommunity is part of our commitment to improve customer services by enhancing connectivity among others. This interconnection also reflects the vibrancy of competition in the telecommunications industry."

The interconnection agreement is expected to begin in March 2021, Globe telco said in a statement.

Globe reported it is also wrapping up an interconnection deal with DITO Telecommunity for the fixed landline services.

Interconnection among telecommunication providers is under provisions for compulsory interconnection of authorized public telecommunications carriers under Republic Act 7925.

This law aims to build a universally accessible and fully integrated nationwide telecommunications network to promote more private sector investments in infrastructure that would benefit the consumers.

DITO is set to launch on March 8, starting in Davao and Cebu. The new telco player will be initially available in at least 17 cities and nearby municipalities in Mindanao and the Visayas.

Dito consortium, formerly Mislatel, composed of Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy and China Telecom, earlier signed an interconnection deal with PLDT.

DITO Telecommunity recently passed its first technical audit after surpassing its first-year commitment concerning speed and population coverage.
